What We Do
We create village events and activities that bring the people of Blackham together. We are from our community and for our community. We enjoy it and hope our efforts are enjoyed. We also welcome ideas - our Christmas Party was a suggestion we were given following a summer event on the Green.
Parties on the Green at Teasley Mead
We are lucky to have a community outdoor space at Teasley Mead - we call it our Village Green, owned and maintained by Withyham Parish Council.
This is a perfect spot for our Summer Outdoor Events - everyone is welcome to come along, bring some food and share it with the community. There’s always a barrel of beer, music and games and, because it is local, we can all walk home as the evening draws to a close. We have celebrated Jubilees, Coronations and just for the fun of it! It is your space. We respect those who live around its edge ensuring that they are always informed about our activities.
A Bit of a Christmas Do
Our Village Hall is the best venue for a cosy winter event. Our annual Christmas Party is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the festivities with our neighbours. Affordable (it’s an expensive time of year)we provide food and entertainment and sometimes there’s a theme! We have quizzed, sung silly songs, listened to poems and danced away. Everyone leaves with a gift as Secret Santa always visits. We hope you will join us - you can simply sit and absorb the atmosphere or join in. It’s up to you.
Children’s Activities
For some events like our family events on the green children are welcome. Others are for parents have time out and relax without their offspring. (Did you know there’s a babysitting group in Blackham?)
We have planned Easter Egg Hunts and a Golden Treasure Hunt (with bags of gold coins hanging from the trees). There’s room for more so if you have an idea and would like to create a team, let us know.
The Tommy Corner
Blackham Village lost many men in the First and Second World Wars and there is a history of marking their sacrifice every Remembrance Sunday. In 2018 the community raised money to buy a ‘There But Not There’ Tommy as a memorial for those in our village who gave their lives for our freedom. The church in Blackham also has the perspex figures, marking those who gave their lives, during the month of November.
Now, ‘Tommy Corner’ appears on the map of Blackham on Google and there is a bench as a resting place for walkers. The trough, donated by a villager, is planted every year and the blue bells and tulips appear every Spring.
